Daniel Farber leads Bright Lights USA, a manufacturing company serving defense and related industries based in New Jersey. Bright Lights USA actively supports charities including the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, which is dedicated to helping people with MS and finding ways to end it. An often disabling central nervous system disease, MS hampers the transmission of information within the brain as well as between brain and body. A study conducted by a team in New York, partly funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, found that people who are obese or overweight had higher levels of fatty molecules known as ceramides that cause monocytes to multiply abnormally. The blood cell monocytes can traverse to the brain and cause nerve fiber damage. This may lead to an accelerated progression of MS. The study bolsters growing evidence linking obesity and MS development. To validate the findings, a study with a larger number of people is required. It's expected that such a study will also help to establish whether modifying diets can aid in reducing MS activity.
